Key West – An Island High on Charm

onKey West – An Island High on Charm
Key West is where artists, chefs, poets, painters, cigar makers, hippies and of course tourists blend in harmony.
The indie-minded locals love it that way and that’s what makes the island what it is. Miami to Key West is a
three and a half hour drive but the 165 miles covered is worthwhile, which is only one of numerous reasons why
Key West ought to be on your itinerary.
Be warned, Key West can be as easy as easy can get where happy hour blends into dinner and one speed
bicycles rule the colorful village streets. Yes, while on the subject, bicycle rental in Key West is a must if you
want to soak in the island at a leisurely pace. It is a not surprising, everything is centered around the ocean, be it
the seafood-driven restaurants, art, and for sunrise worshippers (there are church’s here for those who know
who Jesus Christ is as well) where dawn is a ritual of sorts. Visit Key West once, and you may never want to
leave.
Bike Rentals
While the island may be small, it is high on activities so you are never short of things to do. So let’s take a peek
at some Key West attractions worth adding to your schedule. We strongly suggest you ditch your car and go the
way bohemian locals go, which is on two wheels. There are many bike rental companies that oblige tourists by
offering a drop-off service at many of the island’s hotels. Eaton Bikes on Eaton Street is one among them.
Rentals are around $18 for a full day, which translates into wonderful savings on fuel.
Little White House
Once you pick up a bike you may want to head straight to Truman Annex, a neighborhood and military
installation that was the winter home of President Harry Truman. The Annex is an oasis of calm lined with
palms that surrounds Truman’s Little White House. House tours are held every day throughout the year with
knowledgeable tour guides offering a glimpse into the island’s past and the politics of the Cold War.
Dry Tortugas National Park
Dry Tortugas & Key West are synonymous and no visit to the island can be complete with a trip to Dry
Tortugas National Park. The archipelago of seven reef islands is home to the 19th century un-finished Fort
Jefferson on Garden Key Island. It is the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere. There are
several boat tours to the national park from Key West. The park is an undisturbed tropical ecosystem that allows
for plenty of opportunities for snorkeling, camping, scuba diving, bird watching, and more.
Key West Aquarium
Key West Aquarium on Whitehead Street is one of the first open air aquariums to attract visitors since 1934. A
roof was later added for practical purposes. This is where you can enjoy a close encounter with a variety of
marine life including barracuda, snappers, angelfish, conch, starfish, and loads of other invertebrates. Shark
feeding time can be an exhilarating experience to watch.
Then again, there is so much more to Key West. We could help you explore the island much better if you give
us a call. Our tour planners have everything up their sleeves to chalk out a memorable vacation on the island.
